Leading environmentalist recognised for contribution to environmental conservation

In recognition for his outstanding contribution to conservation of nature and natural resources, Zimbabwe's Centre for Applied Social Science (CASS) Chairperson, Professor Marshal Murphree is among the four global recipients of the prestigious IUCN - The World Conservation Union Honorary Membership award.

Moving on

Saliem Fakir, the IUCN Country Program Coordinator for South Africa, has announced that after 8 years with IUCN he will be moving on to take up new challenges elsewhere. After an exciting and productive spell at IUCN, Saliem feels it is time to let someone else push the envelope further. Saliem joined IUCN South Africa as the inaugural Country Programme Coordinator in January 1998 from the South African 'think tank,' the Land and Agriculture Policy Centre (LAPC)

Future of African Lion under scrutiny

Africa is the primary range of the lion, Panthera leo, yet living with lions poses hardships for many African communities. The lion is a major predator on domestic livestock, leading to strong conflicts with local herders, and also takes human life, with chilling frequency in some areas such as southeastern Tanzania. Yet the lion is not only a source of personal and economic damage and danger, but also of economic and personal benefits, as a primary attraction for tourism and one of Africa's "Big Five" trophy animals

HIV/AIDS has not spared anyone - from protected areas managers, conservation organizations' staff, communities alike - and now, as is becoming clear, the environment. As AIDS-affected households lose income earners and capacity for agricultural labour, they are increasingly turning to natural resources both for the market and as a source of food

Conservation World Remembers CASS Director, Phanuel Mugabe

Phanuel Mugabe (Ph.D.) Director for the Centre for Applied Social Science has been laid to rest. Dr Mugabe died on Sunday, July 10 in Harare. Dr Mugabe scaled the conservation agenda for Zimbabwe, Africa and beyond to greater heights in the nearly 20 years that he worked as both an academic and committed conservationist.

Environment and Sustainable Development in Zimbabwe

In September 2000, the Government of Zimbabwe (GOZ), along with 188 other governments, adopted the Millennium Declaration. The broad objectives of the Millennium Declaration include the creation of an environment - at the national and global levels - which is conducive to development and the elimination of poverty, and to protect the environment. In order to achieve these objectives, the Millennium Declaration articulates 8 specific Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) with respect to poverty, health, education, gender equality, environment and international cooperation, to be achieved by 2015.
